Dietary recommendations for dyslipidemia, that is, for cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL disorders, which you can put into practice, always in the hands of a specialist.
What is dyslipidemia?
The term “dyslipidemia” has replaced previously used terms such as hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, etc. It expresses the general alteration of the metabolic balance of lipids and not only their elevated values.
By dyslipidemia we usually mean disorders of cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL.
Nutritional Approach
Studies show that many of the nutritional strategies used to optimize serum lipids also help with glycemic control in patients with diabetes.
General instructions
To ensure that nutritional changes have an effect on cholesterol and triglycerides, it is also recommended to incorporate the following habits.
- Give up smoking
- Hypolipidemic diet (low in animal fats and trans fatty acids, high in fiber)
- Consumption of foods enriched with plant sterols/stanols (expected to reduce LDL cholesterol by 10%)
- Weight loss (10% reduction in 6 months)
- Increase physical activity (for example, brisk walking 30 to 60 minutes a day most days of the week)
What diet to follow?
The following is a guideline to follow, however, each particular case requires medical supervision in order to find the best results to lower triglycerides and high cholesterol.
- Increase your intake of fiber and complex carbohydrates (such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals, etc.)
- Select poultry (without skin) from the meat group and cook them healthily with olive oil.
- Add a variety of fish at least twice a week, especially fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, trout, and herring).
- Choose low-fat dairy products.
- Limit drinks and foods with added sugars.
- Limit saturated fats (5-6% of total energy intake) and trans fats or replace them with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
- If we drink alcohol, we limit it.
We must take special care with the salt and with the cooking cubes, do not add them to the food. Read food labels carefully and always choose products that are low in salt and sodium.
